garlic eaters

I was chopping garlic today and thought of Holly at Seeking Faithfulness.  She has written in the past that her family of ten (eight children, two adults) uses a lot of garlic.  (Please forgive me, I can’t find the exact posts.)  That got me wondering about how much garlic is a lot?  Most weeks my family of four uses one or two heads (that’s whole heads, not cloves).  Then I started wondering if I we use more than other people.  And if we do, is it because my father is Sicilian?  And that made me think of the character Henry Potter from the movie It’s a Wonderful Life because he says that George has been playing nursemaid to a lot of garlic eaters.  And THAT made me think of this post by Derrick from That NEW Adage.

If you’re still with me after following that odd train of thought, I give you a movie critique that is sixty-two years late.

It’s A Wonderful Life has been a favorite movie of mine for a long time.  That’s really saying something since there is so much I’ve had to overlook in order to keep liking it.  Firstly, the whole premise of the movie introduces serious theological problems:  dead humans don’t become angels, second class or otherwise.  Angels are angels and dead humans are dead humans.  I am, however, able to willingly suspend my disbelief for this one.

Then there’s the scene in which George Bailey is reading the riot act to Mr. Potter during the board meeting.  George references something that Mr. Potter was supposed to have said a moment before, but in fact, those lines must have been cut because Potter never said it.  Part of the quote is “what’d you say just a minute ago? They had to wait and save their money before they even ought to think of a decent home. Wait! Wait for what?”  I have to admit this annoys me.

The ethnic slur Mr. Potter uses when he is wooing George Bailey to come and work for him doesn’t bother me much because I think it’s right in line with Potter’s character.  Of course he uses hateful speech about Italians; he hates everyone.

While Mr. Martini is shown to be a hard-working family man, it was hard to overlook way the Martini family was portrayed during the move into their new home.  The goat really put it over the top.

I don’t like Harry Bailey.  He’s smug and smiles too broadly and he is absolutely disrespectful to the housekeeper, Annie.  It bugs me that his parents would allow the teenaged Harry to talk like that to a woman who is old enough to be his mother.  AND, while it isn’t shown on screen, it is implied that he slaps her bottom.  Truly outrageous.

So, how much garlic do YOU use?

  1. You are a funny, funny girl. :) You make me smile! I’ve missed you!

  2. I estimate 1 garlic head lasts about 2 weeks around here.

We do eat a lot of onions. Is there a stereotype for onion eaters?

As a die hard IAWL fan (I wanted to grow up to be Mary Bailey), I agree with your assessment of Harry Bailey. And I question if there is any scriptural support for, “Every time a bell rings, an angel gets his wings.”

  3. I’ve never seen that movie

  4. Hi everybody.

    Never seen it! oh brother.

  5. Made a homemade ranch dip today. Yummy garlic!
